The town's name transitioned from "Wharton" to Covington shortly after its establishment. Initial maps of the community identified it as "Wharton," named after town founder John Wharton Collins. It wasn't until 1888 that the railroad reached this area. Rail transportation arrived relatively late in this region of Louisiana. Today, the Tammany Trace occupies a significant portion of the land that once served as a railway right-of-way.
